CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS – MONDAY 31 MAY 2010

There will be six concurrent workshops on Monday 31 May 2010. You will be asked to select which workshop you are attending when you register online for ConPharm’10. Attendance at one of these workshops is inclusive of your Early bird registration fee.

Workshop topics, and a brief description of content, are below:

1. Workshop Name: New Drugs.
This workshop will provide pharmacists with an up to date summary of the role of new drugs in the context of the provision of medication reviews in the home or residential aged care setting. The presenter is experienced accredited pharmacist Dr Karen Luetsch, QUM Program Manager of Health Workforce Queensland

2. Workshop Name: Breaking down the barriers – Communicating with people with a mental illness.
(maximum 30 participants)

Claire O’Reilly is a community pharmacist and is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Sydney to research improving mental health services provided through community pharmacy and to develop and evaluate new training and education programs for pharmacists and pharmacy students in the area of mental health. This workshop will equip pharmacists with the knowledge to better understand and support their patients with mental illness, including how to conduct interviews for patients with a mental illness and how to handle mental health related crisis situations in the pharmacy.

3. Workshop Name: INR self monitoring.
(maximum 30 participants)

This workshop, sponsored by Roche Diagnostics, is being repeated at ConPharm ’10 due to popular demand. Participants will be required to complete pre-reading which will be provided prior to the session. This pre-reading is an integral part of the workshop, during which participants will be required to complete a short theory assignment prior to being credentialed. The assignment will be distributed at the conclusion of the workshop. Once it has been completed and marked the AACP is notified and participants will receive certification that they have completed the ‘Anticoagulation Self-Monitoring Education Program and training session.

4. Workshop Name: eMIMS Knowledge Update.
(maximum 50 participants)

More than just medicines information! Getting the best from this resource rich software will add value to your working day! Join Dinah Graham of MIMS as she leads you through the intricacies of eMIMS and learn all there is to know!

5. Workshop Name: RMMRs and QUM-how can you make a difference in your Aged Care Facility.
(maximum 30 participants)

SA accredited pharmacist and former AACP National Advisory Group member Sue Edwards will lead this workshop which will assist those pharmacists working in Aged Care Facilities to provide high quality use of medicines (QUM) services with the aim of increasing knowledge and improving health outcomes. Sue’s extensive experience in this area will provide attendees of this workshop with innovative ideas and alternative plans for the delivery of these important services.

6. Workshop Name: Overcoming Psychological Barriers - developing strategies to ensure that GPs accept your MMR recommendations.
(maximum 30 participants)

Join two experienced University of Sydney researchers as they discuss strategies to ensure that your recommendations provided in HMRs and RMMRs are accepted by GPs. Dr Timothy Chen and Dr Abilo de Almeida Neto will lead this interactive workshop based on the results of their extensive research on this subject.
